The
Third Myanmar-China (2+2) High Level Consultations led by Ministries of Foreign
Affairs and Defence was held on 17 January 2018 at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw. The Myanmar delegation was led by U Kyaw Tin, Union
Minister for International Cooperation and Lt-Gen. Tun Tun Naung, Office of the
Commander-in-Chief (Army), and the Chinese delegation was led by H.E. Mr. Kong
Xuanyou, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Maj. Gen. Shao Yuanming, Deputy
Chief of Staff, Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission.
During
the Meeting, the two sides discussed on matters of strategic importance,
including maintenance of peace, stability and tranquility along the
Myanmar-China border, China’s constructive support to Myanmar’s peace process,
prevention of illegal entry/exit along the border, fight against illegal drugs
and human traffickings, promotion of legal trade, as well as security and
development of the border areas.
The
Third Myanmar-China (2+2) High Level Consultations was attended by the senior
officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defence, Ministry
of Home Affairs, Ministry of Border Affairs and Ministry of Labour, Immigration
and Population and the National Reconciliation and Peace Center.
The
(2+2) High-Level Consultations Mechanism was initiated with an aim to foster
closer and effective cooperation in promoting rule of law, stability, security
and management in the Myanmar-China border areas. The meeting has been held
alternatively in Myanmar and China. The First and Second (2+2) High-Level
Consultations were held in November 2016 and March 2017 in Nay Pyi Taw and
Kunming, respectively. After the meeting, Union Minister U Kyaw Tin hosted the
luncheon in honour of H.E. Mr. Kong Xuanyou and Maj. Gen. Shao Yuanming and
delegations at the MGallery, Lake Garden Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw.
Prior
to the Third Myanmar-China (2+2) High-Level Consultations led by Ministries of
Foreign Affairs and Defence, a preparatory (1+1) meeting between U Kyaw Tin,
Union Minister for International Cooperation and H.E. Mr. Kong Xuanyou, Vice Minister
of Foreign Affairs was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 16 January
2018. Lt-Gen. Tun Tun Naung, Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) and Maj.
Gen. Shao Yuanming, Deputy Chief of Staff, Joint Staff Department of the
Central Military Commission also met at a separate (1+1) meeting at Shwe Nan
Taw Hotel on the same day.
