Deputy
Minister U Aung Hla Tun met with officials of states’, regions’ and districts’
Information and Public Relations Departments (IPRDs) yesterday afternoon at the
Ministry of Information office, Nay Pyi Taw, and urged them to develop the
right to obtain information during the transition period to a democracy and
raise the image of the country on the international stage.
At
the meeting, the deputy minister said the level of interest in the country was
high for various reasons. The country is facing many challenges during its
transition period, and while the government-owned media has been ineffective in
promoting the country’s image on the international stage, the private
newspapers have been in existence for only three to five years. Thus, the
country’s image is in the hands of the international media, he noted.
“We
need to increase access to information and speed up the flow of information systematically,
and our ministry plays a major role in this,” said the deputy minister.
Next,
officials from states’, regions’ and districts’ IPRDs explained about acquiring
and reporting on regional news and the difficulties faced, while IPRD
Director-General U Ye Naing reported on a plan to conduct training sessions on
news writing, reporting, law, rules and ethics to improve the flow of correct
information. The meeting came to an end with concluding remarks by the deputy
minister.
