State Counsellor departs for visits to Canada and Sweden

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi left Yangon last night for official visits to Canada and Sweden at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mr. Justin Trudeau and Swedish Parliament Speaker Mr. Urban Ahli.

The State Counsellor and party were seen off at the airport by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, Charge d’affaires of Canadian Embassy in Myanmar Mr. Loc Pham, Minister Counsellor of Swedish Embassy in Myanmar Mr. Johan Hallenbog and other officials.

The State Counsellor is accompanied on her trip by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin and Deputy Minister from the Office of the President U Min Thu and other officials. During the official visits, the State Counsellor will discuss with officials from Canada and Sweden on the two countries’ transition to a federal democracy system.

She will meet with Mr. Trudeau on 7 June. This is Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s first visit to Canada and Sweden as State Counsellor and Foreign Minister. The State Counsellor holds honorary citizenship to Canada, which was presented to her in 2012 by John Baird, the Conservative foreign minister at the time, during a visit to Myanmar.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is scheduled to visit Canada from 5 June to 9 June, travelling to Toronto and Ottawa. She and her entourage will then depart for Sweden.
