Meeting for accurate statistics held

The Committee for Accurate and Quality Statistics meeting (2/2017) was held yesterday morning at the conference hall of the Ministry of Planning and Finance, with Patron of the Committee Vice President U Henry Van Thio delivering the opening speech.

The Vice President spoke on the importance for statistics to be accurate and authentic when laying down policies for the development of the nation, setting, planning and evaluating realistic project goals, selecting objectives to be given priority for national development. That is also why it is important for statistics to be authentic, punctual and swift in their report.

A National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) is being drafted together with static firms while networking with Developmental Organisations to acquire the necessary trust funds and technology.

It is necessary to acquire statistics from the private sector and for statistics to encompass all necessary sectors. Also necessary is to push for legal rights of statistics after ratifying of laws concerned to it. Equally important is for state and region ministries to work together in establishing a platform for stakeholders to participate.

Concerned government departments should also collaborate in gathering statistics for reduction of natural disasters in accord with the Sendai framework for disaster risk reduction and for the development of indexes within the national context.
The Vice President also stressed the importance of accomplishing SDGs goals and the Sendai framework, shot and long term projects and developing indexes.

At the meeting, Union Minster U Kyaw Win from the Ministry of Planning and Finance talked on the challenges and difficulties along with requirements they faced in getting accurate and authentic statistics.

This was followed by an address from Dr. Wah Wah Maung, Director-General of the Central Statistical Organisation, explaining the progress and completed projects of the various working groups.

Afterwards, the Union Minister discussed and replied to reports and questions from the participants.

The Vice President then spoke on the importance of strengthening realistic policies in fulfilling the requirements of the public and the necessity for accurate statistics.

The Central Statistical Organisation is also working on new laws concerning statistics which will be on par with international standards and will be ratified in the near future. For the completion and realization of the NSDS, ten subcommittees have been formed under the Committee for Accurate and Quality Statistics.

Present at the meeting were Union Minster for Planning and Finance U Kyaw Win, ministers working in business sectors from Region and State Governments, Permanent Secretaries, Department Heads, and leaders and officials from the NSDS organization.
