On 5 March,
Yangon Region’s Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein underwent heart surgery at the
Yankin Children’s Hospital. The operation began at 7am and was successfully
completed by about 1pm, with the Chief Minister reported to be in good
condition. It is also marked as a successful milestone of the myanmar doctors
in heart surgery.
U Phyo Min Thein
was diagnosed with congenital stenosis of the heart valve and an enlarged
aorta. His surgery was performed by veteran Myanmar doctors.
The success for
the operation can be credited to the systematic pre-planning by various members
including Union Minister for Health and Sports leadership and guidance, the
Permanent Secretary, Director General for Health Department, the Head of Yangon
Region Health Department, and the various committees formed under the Yankin
Children’s Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer.
The team of
doctors include Dr. Myint Myint Khine (Chief Medical Officer, Yankin Children’s
Hospital), Prof. Aung Ye Oo (Cardiothoracic Surgeon, UK), Prof. Win Win Kyaw
(Cardiothoracic Surgeon), Prof. Aung Thu (Cardiothoracic Surgeon), Prof. Aung
Kyi (Anesthetist), Prof. Aye Aye Aye (Cardiac Anesthetist), Prof. Thida Aung
(National Blood Bank), Prof. Zaw Than Htun (Chief Physician), Prof.
Kyaw Zin Wai (Pediatrician), Associate Professor Khin Yin Yin Htwe (Cardiac
Anesthetist), Associate Professor Than Oo (Radiologist), Dr. Lei Lei Htun
(General Practitioner), Dr. Nyi Nyi (Cardiac Anesthetist), Dr. Nyan Lin Aung
(Perfusionist, Cardiac Anesthetist), Dr. Aung Thein Htut (Physician Assistant,
Child Cardiology), and Dr. Than Htike Aung (Cardiac Chief Physician), all
working in close proximity.
The heart
surgery team was led by Prof. Aung Ye Oo with collaboration from Prof. Win Win
Kyaw and Prof. Aung Thu.
Prof. Aung Ye Oo
graduated from the Yangon University of Medicine (1) in 1988 and beginning in
2014 held the position of Chief of Surgery and Professor at the Liverpool Heart
and Chest Hospital in Liverpool, England. He also serves as chairman for the UK
Aortic Forum and starting in 2013 has made annual visits to Myanmar and the
Yankin Children’s Hospital seven times and has performed surgeries for over 90
patients.
During the
surgery for the Yangon Chief Minister, the anesthetic team was led by Prof. Aye
Aye Aye with collaboration from Associate Professor Khin Yin Yin Htwe, Dr. Nyan
Lin Aung and the nursing team led by Head Nurse Daw Htwe Khin.
The Ministry for
Health and Sports announced that the successful heart surgery performed on
Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein by medical staff from Myanmar
marks an extraordinary milestone for medicine in Myanmar.
