Forty-four Myanmar nationals, half of them women,
who were sold into forced labour in Thailand have been returned to Myanmar,
according to Thai officials.
The 44 victims, many of them dragging their baggage
and belongings behind them, were formally handed over by Thai authorities to
their Myanmar counterparts on Tuesday morning.
After scrutinising the citizenship verification of
the trafficked victims, Thai officials led by Police Captain Vutthichai Teekayu
sent the 44 survivors of the human trafficking to the Myanmar government at a
temporary shelter opened in Ward-4, Myawady Town, Myawady District, Kayin
State.
The Myawady District Social Welfare Department received the survivors, 22 of
them young females, who were previously accommodated at the Thailand’s social
welfare houses, said U Myint Zaw, deputy director of the department.
The department will allow them to return to their
homes after completing an investigation process to be done at the Youth
Training Center in Mawlamyine Township over the next three days, U Myint Zaw
said.
The department will provide the survivors with transportation expenses and
other support.
Present at the hand-over ceremony were officials from the Ministry of Labour,
Immigration and Population, the Task Force against Trafficking in Persons
(Myawady), the Maternal and Child Welfare Association and the Women’s Affairs
Organisation.
