State Counsellor receives ceremonial welcome in Singapore

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who is on an official visit to Singapore, met with Singaporean businessmen at the Shangri-La Hotel yesterday afternoon.

Also present at the meeting were the Union Minister for Commerce Dr Than Myint, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Singapore Mr Vivian Balakrishnan, the Minister of Trade and Industry Mr Lim Hng Kiang, officials and Singaporean businessmen.

The State Counsellor explained the economic and investment policies of Myanmar and opportunities for investment in Myanmar and responded to question raised by the businessmen.

In the evening, the State Counsellor received a ceremonial welcome at the Istana, the official residence of the president of Singapore, by Prime Minister Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Singapore’s prime minister and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi inspected the guard of honour before she signed the visitor’s book.

The state counsellor then held talks with the Singaporean prime minister on negotiations between Singapore and Myanmar on a Bilateral Investment Treaty, the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement signed by the two countries in 1999 and a 3-year extension of the MoU on Myanmar-Singapore Vocational Training and flights for Singapore Airlines between the two countries.

Last night, the State Counsellor attended a dinner hosted by the prime minister of Singapore.
