The Government is treating the identification, prevention and suppression of online scams and online gambling operations as a national responsibility, recognizing the serious threat these crimes pose not only to local communities but also to the socioeconomic well-being of people worldwide. It is also working closely with neighbouring governments to effectively investigate, identify, arrest and take action against those involved in such activities.
In line with these efforts, combined teams comprising security personnel conducted investigations and searches in Tachilek Township, eastern Shan State, following reports that online scam and gambling operations were being carried out in the area.
At around 5:45 pm on 31 October, the teams raided the Yu Warat Hotel in Samseng (A) Ward, Tachilek, and arrested 83 Thai nationals, comprising 42 men and 41 women, who were allegedly involved in online scam and gambling activities. They also seized 40 various laptops and 75 mobile phones used in the operations.
The arrestees will face effective and stringent legal action under existing laws after the necessary investigations have been completed. The seized equipment will also be dealt with in accordance with established procedures, according to reports. — MNA/ST
