THE Government of Myanmar attaches great importance to its national responsibility to detect and prevent online fraud and gambling, which pose serious threats not only to residents but also to the socioeconomic well-being of people worldwide. It is also cooperating with neighbouring governments to effectively detect, arrest and prosecute offenders.
In
this regard, following reports of online gambling activities in Mongnawng
Township, southern Shan State, combined teams comprising security personnel
conducted an investigation in the area. At about 11:30 am yesterday, they
arrested 17 Chinese nationals involved in illegal online gambling at a location
about 1,500 metres southeast of Wamli Village.
During
the operation, the teams also seized one temporary shelter measuring 15 feet by
50 feet, another measuring 15 feet by 20 feet, three measuring 15 feet by 30
feet, a temporary kitchen measuring 20 feet by 30 feet, a temporary store
measuring 15 feet by 20 feet, five Starlink devices, 20 all-in-one computers,
50 assorted mobile phones, a generator, a freezer and other related equipment.
Upon
completion of the necessary investigations, legal action will be taken against
those involved in online gambling under existing laws, while the seized
equipment will be dealt with in line with established procedures.
The
Government continues implementing measures to combat online gambling and
telecom fraud in cooperation with neighbouring countries, regional partners and
international organizations, with the aim of eliminating such activities and
preventing them from taking root in Myanmar.
