Myanmar qualified for the 2027 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup after defeating Hong Kong SAR 2-1 in the final Group G qualifier at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon on 11 October.
With
qualification at stake, both teams gave their all, but Myanmar came from behind
to secure victory. The result earned Myanmar a place in the final tournament
for the third time, marking their second consecutive appearance.
Japanese
coach Yuki Tetsuro, who previously achieved notable success with Myanmar’s
senior women’s national team also guided the U17 side to Asian qualification in
his first tournament in charge.
Both
teams fielded their strongest line-ups, with Myanmar applying pressure from the
opening whistle. However, Hong Kong, who were strong at long-range shooting,
took the lead in the 28th minute through Wang Yi’s longrange effort. Myanmar
continued pressing for an equaliser and captain Shin Thant Phyu Sin Pyone
levelled the score in the 42nd minute, leaving the teams tied 1-1 at half-time.
Myanmar
maintained their attacking pressure after the break, and Thet Thet Wai scored
the decisive goal with a long-range shot in the 60th minute. Myanmar then
focused on protecting their lead and effectively contained Hong Kong’s attempts
to find an equalizer. At the end of the Group G qualifiers, Myanmar topped the
group with six points from two wins to secure qualification. Hong Kong finished
with three points, while Guam lost both matches and failed to qualify.
Myanmar
secured their place in the final tournament with a 9-0 victory over Guam
followed by the 2-1 win over Hong Kong.
