A historic landmark and a tourist destination in Yangon, the Bogyoke Aung San Market’s centenary celebration opened yesterday.
The centenary celebration was
opened with a ribbon-cutting led by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Aung Naing
Thu and officials.
Along with the regional chief
minister, regional cabinet members, department officials and guests attended
the ceremony, and they visited stalls at the market. Artistes entertained the
audience with their music and dance performances.
The centenary celebration started
on 7 October and will end on 11 October.
The market, which is located on
Bogyoke Aung San Road in Pabedan Township and formerly known as Scott Market, was
established in 1926. It was named after Mr Gavin Scott, the Municipal Commissioner
of the time. In 2026, Yangon’s iconic heritage market reaches its centenary,
standing as a living testament to the city’s history and culture.
