President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing was conferred an Honorary Professorship by G V Plekhanov Russian University of Economics at a ceremony held at the university’s graduation hall in Moscow, the Russian Federation, yesterday morning.
The Myanmar high-level delegation led by the President was
warmly welcomed by Russian Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Mr
Mogilevsky Konstantin Ilyich, Rector Mr Lobanov Ivan Vasilyevich and university
officials. The President subsequently met with the Russian deputy minister and
the rector to discuss the university’s programmes in economics, science and
technology, digital technology and AI, as well as ways to further promote
educational cooperation between Myanmar and the university.
At the honorary degree ceremony, the Russian Deputy Minister
of Science and Higher Education said the university’s board had unanimously
supported conferring the honorary professorship on President U Min Aung Hlaing.
He said the move would contribute to strengthening cooperation between Myanmar
and Russia, particularly in education and economic affairs. He also highlighted
the growing bilateral educational cooperation, including scholarships for
Myanmar students and an education cooperation memorandum signed between the two
countries last year.
The university rector then formally conferred the Honorary
Professorship of the G V Plekhanov Russian University of Economics on President
U Min Aung Hlaing.
In his remarks, President U Min Aung Hlaing expressed his
gratitude for the honorary title, saying he regarded the honour not only as
recognition of himself but also as an honour bestowed on Myanmar and its
people. He said the award would serve as an impetus for strengthening strategic
partnerships between Myanmar and Russia in education, research and long-term
development.
The President noted that Plekhanov Russian University of
Economics has a history of 119 years and has educated more than 14,000
students, including international students from 75 countries. He also praised
the university’s efforts to strengthen international and academic links.
He said Myanmar and Russia established diplomatic relations
on 18 February 1948, and marked the 75th anniversary in 2023. According to the
President, bilateral cooperation has expanded into strategic partnerships
covering the economy, energy, space and the peaceful use of nuclear technology,
with relations deepening significantly over the past five years.
Highlighting the importance of education and human-resource
development, President U Min Aung Hlaing said Myanmar had sent more than 7,000
scholars to Russia over the past 25 years. He expressed appreciation to Russia
for its support and cooperation in developing Myanmar’s human resources.
He further said Myanmar seeks to expand educational
cooperation with Russia through academic exchanges, joint research and
scholarship programmes. He also expressed his appreciation for the honorary
professorship and confidence that Plekhanov Russian University of Economics
would play an important role in cooperation with Myanmar universities and other
development sectors.
The President later signed the university’s guest book, after
which the rector presented him with the honorary professorship regalia.
