Flood alerts issued across Myinmu, Pakokku, NyaungU, Hpa-an, Madauk, and Myitnge

 

THE Department of Meteorology and Hydrology reports that river levels across Myanmar continue to rise, with waters in Myinmu, Pakokku, NyaungU, Hpa-an, Madauk, and Myitnge already surpassing danger marks in their respective towns.

Based on measurements taken at 6:30 am on 11 August, the Ayeyawady River water level in Myinmu has exceeded the danger mark by 26 centimetres and is forecast to rise by another 15 centimetres within the next day; 34 centimetres above the danger mark in Pakokku and 51 centimetres in NyaungU, with forecasts to rise by approximately 20 centimetres over the next day.

While the Chindwin River in Monywa is forecast to recede, the Thanlwin River at Hpa-an has risen 80 centimeters above the danger mark and is expected to climb another 10 centimeters within the next day. The Sittoung River at Madauk has risen 18 centimeters above the danger mark and is expected to remain elevated, while the Dokhtawady River at Myitnge has surged to a critical 116 centimeters above the danger mark and is projected to stay high.

Authorities have issued warnings urging residents along riverbanks and in lowlying areas of the affected townships to closely monitor flood conditions and prepare to relocate swiftly to safe locations if necessary.
