The Yangon iconic Bogyoke Aung San Market will mark its centenary with celebrations from 7 to 11 October, according to Daw Chaw Su Htwe of the Centenary Festival Organizing Committee.
More than 100 stalls featuring local products, cotton products, textiles, gems and jewellery, and food will operate during the Bogyoke Aung San Market Centenary Festival. The entertainment programme will include a Myanmar Thanaka exhibition, puppet shows, 1970s-style musical performances, and commemorative photo sessions in traditional ethnic costumes.
“We organized this festival to
showcase the history of the Bogyoke Aung San Market, one of the heritage
landmarks in Yangon, and to strengthen ties among business owners through the
event. We also hope visitors will gain a better understanding of the market
architecture and that the younger generation will learn about its rich
history,” said Daw Chaw Su Htwe, a member of the Bogyoke Aung San Market
Centenary Festival Organizing Committee.
The Bogyoke Aung San Market is home to more than 1,800 shops selling gemstones,
gold, silver, jewellery, antiques, paintings, silk and cotton fabrics,
handicrafts, tailoring services, consumer goods, cosmetics, and food.
Constructed in 1926, the market was originally named Scott Market after Gavin Scott, the Municipal Commissioner at the time. It was renamed Yannaing Market in 1943 and subsequently renamed Bogyoke Aung San Market in 1948. The market celebrates its centenary in 2026.
