A combined team, including members of the Drug Enforcement Division, seized 26.6 kilogrammes of ice (methamphetamine) at Yangon International Airport at 8:30 am on 26 April from two passengers – Myo Nyi Nyi Hein (32) and Ma Hnin Thazin Oo (29), residents of Tamway Township – who were preparing to board a flight from Yangon to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Further investigation led to the arrest, at around 11 am the same day, of four additional passengers due to travel on the same flight: Tin Aung Than (32), Ma Khin Thandar Win (33), Khin Maung Than (41), and Chan Myae Paing (24), from Mingala Taungnyunt Township. A further 56.05 kilogrammes of Ice (methamphetamine) were seized from them.
Follow-up operations at 11:30 am led officers to an international freight forwarding company office in Mingala Taungnyunt Township, where two women – Ma Htet Ekari (23) and Ma Kyal Sin Lin Lei (19) – were arrested along with 9.5 kilogrammes of methamphetamine.
Based on their statements, two additional suspects – Aung Kyaw Win (a) Aung Aung (41), and his wife Ma Thandar Lwin (46), residents of Aungmyaythazan Township – were apprehended at a hotel in Lashio, where a kilogramme of methamphetamine was seized.
In total, 93.15 kilogrammes of Ice (methamphetamine), with an estimated local value of K2.31 billion, were confiscated during the operation.
Investigations revealed that the drugs were intended for trafficking to Malaysia and had been arranged by an individual identified as Lauk Chi from Linti Village in Hsipaw Township, who remains at large. Legal action has been taken against those arrested, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, and further investigations are ongoing to identify additional offenders involved in the network.
