Efforts underway to strengthen Myanmar’s energy security, domestic production

The Ministry of Electricity and Energy is implementing both short-term and long-term plans to strengthen the country’s energy security, ensure the efficient and effective use of energy in the economic sector, develop energy infrastructure, reduce dependence on imported energy, and promote the development of domestic energy resources.

In addition, the Ministry is carrying out initiatives such as constructing a modern oil refinery to enable domestic production and use of petroleum products, applying advanced technologies to increase the output of oil and natural gas from domestic fields, and cooperating with private entrepreneurs to enhance oil and gas production activities.

In efforts to increase production from onshore oil and gas fields, research and development activities are being carried out. Research and analysis of thin sandstone formations in Well 14 have been conducted at the Maubin (South) Oil and Gas Field operated by Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise under the Ministry of Electricity and Energy. Following drilling operations, approximately two million cubic feet of natural gas were produced yesterday.

The newly increased natural gas output is being distributed through the Ywama Gas Distribution Station in Yangon for use in electricity generation.

Since the end of 2023, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy has been conducting research and analysis of thin sandstone formations in the Aphyauk and Maubin oil and gas fields. The natural gas produced from these fields is being supplied for use in compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in Yangon, fertilizer factories, industrial plants in Yangon Region and Ayeyawady Region, liquefied petroleum gas plants, and the electricity generation sector.
