Prisoners released to mark 64th Peasants’ Day




In commemoration of 1387 ME full moon day of Taboung, 64th Peasants’ Day that falls on 2 March 2026, on humanitarian and compassionate grounds as well as on the goodwill of the government, the Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has remitted the punishment of 2,825 prisoners from their respective prisons, jails and camps reducing one-sixth of sentence they are serving as per the Code of Criminal Procedure Article 401 (1) except those convicted of murder and rape or jailed for charges under Explosives Act, Unlawful Association Act, 1878 Arms Act Section 19(f), 1949 The Arms (Emergency Penalty held) Act (temporary) 1951 Arms (Temporary Amendment) Act, 1924 Shan State Arms Order, 2023 Weapons Law, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, Natural Disaster Management Law, Counter Terrorism Law and Anti-Corruption Law before 2 March 2026.

Moreover, he pardoned 7,337 male and female prisoners, who face punishment, from their respective prisons, jails and camps under Counter Terrorism Law Sections 50(J) and 52(A) in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure Article 401 (1) on condition that “they will have to serve the new punishment together with the remaining punishment to which they were sentenced this time if more offence is committed.”

Similarly, 9,532 cases involving 12,487 individuals prosecuted under Counter Terrorism Law Sections 50 (J) and 52 (A) and under Code of Criminal Procedure Article 512 for attempting to evade were also withdrawn, and the offenders were pardoned.

Although the government-imposed prison sentences on the prisoners in accordance with the crimes they had committed, arrangements were made at the prisons and camps to provide social, healthcare services and other human rights standards fully in accordance with established norms. Currently, the released inmates were warmly welcomed by their parents and relatives.
