Myohaung-Thilawa cargo train derails after sabotaged tracks on Mandalay-Yangon railway

THE No 902 Down cargo train, which departed from Samon Station at 1:09 am yesterday on the Mandalay–Yangon route from Myohaung to Thilawa, derailed at 1:18 am at the 80-foot concrete frame bridge 687/A at milepost 327/12-11, between Samon and Thaedaw stations in Wundwin Township, near the Mandalay-side bridge entrance and at another point on the track.

A total of two rail track plates, rail bolts, and rail clips were removed and destroyed. The derailment occurred when the connection between the concrete slipway and the track was tampered with, as the track control clips had been removed and destroyed by miscreants. Two fully loaded enclosed carriages and one brake carriage derailed, affecting cars 15 through 17.

As a result, the Samon– Thaedaw down section of the railway was temporarily closed at 1:30 am. Work to remove the three derailed carriages was completed by 1:55 pm, and the replacement of damaged concrete slipway blocks was finished by 2:15 pm. The No 902 Down train departed for Thilawa at 2:30 pm, and the section was reopened at 2:41 pm, with train operations resuming as usual.

This act is a despicable attempt to endanger train passengers and cause significant disruption to goods transport. The public is urged to report any suspicious actions to the relevant authorities in a timely manner to prevent train accidents.

Under Section 79(c) in Chapter 18 of the Railway Transport Law, issued on 5 January 2016, anyone who removes, loosens, moves, or destroys any railway track or related equipment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of five to 20 years and may also be fined. Myanmar Railways has opened a case regarding this incident and will continue to take action according to the law, according to information provided by the Myanma Railways.
