Myanmar attends SCO meetings in Moscow, reaffirming commitment to sustainable development goals

A Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister U Kyaw Htin of the Ministry of National Planning attended the meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states, along with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Forum on Sustainable Development, held in Moscow, Russia.

On 17 November, the deputy minister took part in the discussion under the section titled “Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in SCO Member States and Partner Countries” at the SCO Forum on Sustainable Development, held at the Moscow ESG Centre in Moscow.

The deputy minister stated that Myanmar is giving priority to the successful implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 goals, integrating the SDGs as national priorities within Myanmar’s development plans and policy frameworks in line with the principle of “Leave No One Behind”. He noted that Myanmar has made progress in several SDG-related areas, including poverty reduction, education, health, energy, environmental conservation and climate-related actions. At the same time, he highlighted the challenges faced, such as limited financial resources, the need for improved statistical and institutional capacity, and the impact of global economic uncertainties.

He emphasized that no country can achieve sustainable development through its own efforts alone, and that continued regional cooperation, access to finance and technology, effective partnerships and mutual learning among countries are essential. In this regard, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization plays an important role in supporting efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. He added that SCO member states possess diverse experiences, abundant resources and shared aspirations, and that Myanmar will continue to work closely with member states and dialogue partners within the SCO cooperation framework.

This year’s SCO Forum on Sustainable Development was attended by a total of 34 delegates from 15 countries, including SCO member states.
