ACCORDING to the regional salt official, the salt industry in Ayeyawady Region is in a good position to expand its operations for the 2025-26 season due to the favourable salt price.
Applications for salt
licences have been open in the region since October, and more people will
likely start working in the salt industry.
“Last year, there was a
lot of rain and salt prices went up. At these prices, which are around at least
K500 or K600 per viss, farmers are doing fine. The licence application started
just in October. But according to some reports, more people are going to enter
the industry mainly because of the price. They can still make a profit even if
the prices fall a little. So, we plan to produce more. This year, there will be
more acres of salt farms”, he told The Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).
Last year, the price of
salt was around K120 to K130 per viss in the same period, but in the current
situation, it is K850 to K1,500 per viss, depending on the salt quality.
The region produced
only 130,000 tonnes of salt last year, which is a significant decrease compared
to previous years. In the same period last year, the salt production in Mon
State was around 20,000 tonnes, which is a decrease in the salt production, he
added.
The salt farmers
prepare the salt fields from September to November, and the rate of salt
production depends on the weather. 65 per cent of the country’s salt production
is reportedly from Ayeyawady Region, with the majority distributed to central
Myanmar.
