A cargo train derailed between Theinseik and Donwun stations in Thaton Township, Mon State, following a mine explosion triggered by terrorists linked to the NUG and CRPH. The incident occurred around 8:45 am on 24 May as Train No 687, transporting gravel from Thebyugon, passed through milepost 123/23-24.
The
explosion caused the locomotive and several wagons to derail. Local security
forces and railway personnel responded immediately to secure the area and begin
repairs. Myanma Railways has temporarily suspended service on this section of
the Bago-Mawlamyine railway section.
Passenger
services were affected as a Yangon-bound train No 81 was halt at Theinzayat
Station at 10:15 am, and the Mawlamyine-bound train No 82 stopped at Thebyugon
at 9:07 am. Passengers have been reimbursed for their tickets.
According
to authorities, terrorists have committed 82 mine attacks on rail tracks, 176
mine attacks on railway bridges and lines and 16 arson attacks on stations and
staff housing since February 2021. These repeated acts aim to disrupt public
safety, destroy State-owned infrastructure and hinder the movement of
passengers and cargo.
Despite
the damage, the government remains committed to upgrading railway
infrastructure and transport services to ensure safe and efficient travel for
the public.
