Train schedules suspended due to detonation of railway by terrorists

 

A terrorist group detonated explosives on the Yangon-Mandalay railway at the 126/7-8 mile post near Patta village in Phyu Township at 1:42 am on 24 May and again at approximately 2 am.

As a result of the mine explosion, approximately four feet of the track broke off, and about five blocks of concrete sleepers were damaged. Consequently, all trains operating on the Yangon-Mandalay railway were temporarily stopped at Nyaungpintha and Kanyutkwin stations for repairs by the relevant authorities. The railway was reopened at 12:15 pm after repairs.

The travel schedules were suspended for about 30 minutes, and all passengers arrived at their destinations safely.

Terrorist groups have been detonating railways since February 2021. There have been 206 incidents of detonations on railways and stations, 164 mining incidents on bridges, and 42 incidents of arson targeting railway staff’s houses.

In efforts to enhance railway and infrastructure development, projects for upgrading the rail transport system are continually being planned and managed. However, terrorists have damaged state-owned locomotives, carriages, railways, and bridges, disrupting passenger and goods transport. These acts have also affected the momentum of the Yangon-Mandalay railway upgrading project. Reports indicate that residents and the general public strongly condemn these repeated terrorist acts aimed at impeding the state’s development.
