IN order to ensure prompt and effective emergency response measures for the approaching storm, it is imperative that the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and the Regional/State Disaster Management Teams establish timely communication and convene a coordination meeting at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement yesterday afternoon.
The Chair of National Disaster Management Working Committee Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, the deputy minister, Nay Pyi Taw Council member 1, ministers for security and border affairs of region/ state governments and officials from the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) attended the meeting.
First, Chair of the National Disaster Management Working Committee Union Minister Dr Thet Thet Khine said that, according to the official announcement made at 11:30 am yesterday, the current storm has intensified into a severe low-pressure system and is projected to develop into an extremely potent cyclone by the morning of 12 May. In light of this, an emergency meeting on the National Disaster Management Working Committee was convened on 6 May, during which emergency response measures were established.
Subsequently, the Union minister detailed the actions pertaining to the 19 resolutions adopted during the emergency meeting of the National Committee on 6 May, 15 resolutions on 8 May, and 17 resolutions on 9 May.
Then, Disaster Management Centre Secretary Colonel Soe Myint Aung from office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) explained the communication between DMC and regions/states and the format of information collection.
Afterwards, members of the National Disaster Management Working Committee such as Nay Pyi Taw Council member 1 and the ministers of the Region/State Security and Border Affairs explained the opening of disaster risk management organization offices in Nay Pyi Taw Council and in regions/states, holding emergency meetings, planning for search and rescue operations and ensuring security, as well as pre-stocking emergency food supplies.
