Cyclone Mocha causes deaths, trails of destruction

THE severely cyclonic storm Mocha in the Bay of Bengal caused tides, strong winds, heavy rains and flash floods.









Due to Cyclone Mocha on 14 May, 12 houses, three religious buildings, one monastery, three schools, one airport lounge, eight lamp posts, one transformer and one wall were damaged and destroyed in 44 wards and villages of Nay Pyi Taw while two houses, one monastery, two departmental buildings in five wards and villages of Chin State, one house, three telecom towers, one lamp-post and three walls in seven wards and villages of Sagaing Region, 113 houses, two telecom towers, one lamp-post and one signboard in 72 wards and villages of Bago Region, two houses, nine lamp posts, three walls and 78 paddy files in 14 wards and villages of Magway Region, four religious building in Mandalay Region, 588 houses, three religious buildings, eight monasteries, 25 schools nine clinics, one market, one telecom tower, seven lamp-posts, one transformer, 26 departmental buildings and 181 losses in Mandalay Region, 15 houses, one monastery, four schools, one telecom tower, six departmental buildings and one football field in 35 wards and villages of Yangon Region, 131 houses, one religious building, five monasteries, 32 schools, five clinics, nine lamp posts and three departmental buildings in 114 wards and villages of Ayeyawady Region.

Three people – one each from Sittway, Taungup and Yekyi townships – were killed in the severe storm. Detailed investigations are being made in Kyauktaw, MraukU, Minbya, Myebon, Ponnagyun, Rathedaung, Pauktaw, Buthidaung of Rakhine State and Paletwa of Chin State.

In the cyclone-affected areas, the rescue teams in respective regions and states are undertaking rescue measures together with volunteer organizations, and officials concerned went to the sites and provided necessary assistance.
