ITALIAN grape variety is successfully produced in Yamethin Township, Mandalay Region and the growers expect the price to smash record high.
“It is called Italy Shwewah Jade in
our region. It is of foreign origin. The growers started the experimental
plantation of Italian grapes. The variety is rare so the price is pretty good.
At present, it fetches over K5,000 per viss (a viss equals 1.6 kilogrammes).
The price usually goes up in summer. The price is likely to reach a fresh peak
if the prevailing market price is that high,” said U Myo, the
grower-cum-producer.
This Italian grape is of better
quality and taste compared to other local varieties. Moreover, it is suitable
for commercial farming due to its high yield, a commercial-scale grower U Win
Tint suggested.
“Last year, it was priced at around
K2,500 per viss. This year, the price is expected to hike as this Italian grape
has penetrated markets in Yangon and other big cities. Consumers can purchase
other grape varieties (No.3 and BQ) all year-round. We still need to grasp
market share for this variety in the domestic market. The grapes will be ready to
be placed on the market in the coming month. The sweet flavour and great
texture will attract buyers. A single plant can produce approximately 17 visses,”
he added.
Italian grape variety will flow
into markets in February. The current market prices of grapes move in the range
of K2,500 to K6,000 depending on the quality and different varieties (Italian
grape, RG, Black Queen, No.3 and Chun).
