H.E. U Kyaw Tin, Union
Minister for International Cooperation of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar,
attending the 73rd United Nations General Assembly, signed the Treaty on the
Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of
the Union of Myanmar, at the High-Level ceremony on the Treaty on the Prohibition
of Nuclear Weapons, on 26 September 2018, during the United Nations Treaty
Event 2018.
The High-Level ceremony
was held in conjunction with International Day for the Total Elimination of
Nuclear Weapons. Together with the Union Minister, high ranking officials from
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Mission of the Republic of the Union
of Myanmar to the United Nations were also present at the event.
The ceremony was also
attended by the President of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly H.E. Ms.
Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, Chairman of the International Committee of the
Red Cross Mr. Peter Maurer, Under Secretary and High Representative for
Disarmament Ms. Izuml Nakamitsu, Executive Director of International Campaign
to Abolish Nuclear Weapon (ICAN) Ms. Beatrice Fihn, Under Secretary General of
United Nations Office of Legal Affairs Miguel de Serpa Soares and Chief of
Treaty Section Mr. Santiago Villapando.
Myanmar has now become
the 61st signatory to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
Together with Myanmar, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Brunei Darussalam, Guinea-Bissau,
Seychelles and Timor-Leste also signed the Treaty at the event.
