A
commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the 8888 Uprising for democracy, which
falls on 8th August, was held at the Yangon University yesterday.
The
ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Information Dr. Pe Myint, Chief
Minister of Yangon Region U Phyo Min Thein, Yangon Region Hluttaw Speaker U Tin
Maung Tun and Deputy Speaker U Lin Naing Myint, cabinet members of the Yangon
Region Government, Hluttaw representatives, representatives of the political
parties, diplomats, those who participated in the 8888 Uprising, students and
people.
At
the ceremony, attendees saluted the Fighting Peacock Flag which was used in the
uprising in 1988 and observed eight seconds of silence to pay tribute to those
who sacrificed their lives in the nationwide democracy movements.
On
behalf of the committee on holding the commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of
the 8888 Uprising,

Min Ko Naing extended greetings.
Next,
Ko Sithu Tun of the Yangon East University Students’ Union, read out the
message from Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Speaker U T Khun Myat to the event.
Afterwards,
Ko Lin Htet of Thanlyin Technology University Students’ Union read out the
message from Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw Mahn Win Khaing Than to the event.
Political
parties, civil society organizations and organizations sent messages to the
30th anniversary commemoration of the 8888 Uprising.
At
the event, U Thet Tun, on behalf of the committee, read out the suggestions
made at the talks over the 30 year period after the 888 Uprising and the
commemoration ceremony came to an end with concluding remarks by U Ko Ko Gyi.
In
memory of the 1988 revolution, documentary photos on political situation before
1988, democracy movement during the 1988 uprising, news releases, flags and
things that were used in the uprising are also displayed to the public at the
Recreation Centre of the university.
