Union
Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Win Myat Aye
participated in the first ever global disability summit which kicked off in
London on 23 July.
The
Civil Society Forum took place Monday, 23 July, one day prior to the Global
Disability Summit discussing current issues relevant to the global disability
movement, key themes; stigma and discrimination, ensuring collecting
information on disabled, inclusiveness for making assessment to the disabled,
effective implementation of UN convention on the rights of disabled and 2030
program, the role of civil society in development of the disabled, education,
and understanding of the sustainable goals for the disabled by the policy
makers.
Speaking
at the Global Disability Summit on 24 July, Union Minister Dr. Win Myat Aye
pledged that Myanmar, regarding the Charter for Change, will make assessment to
the policy and to provide inclusive education, economic empowerment, creating
good job environment, assisting the disabled in using modern communication
technology, carrying out survey for the disabled, adopting national level
programs for the development and safeguarding and rehabilitation of the
disabled during the after the disasters.
The
summit, which is taking place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London,
is anchored on four key themes; Stigma and discrimination, inclusive education,
economic empowerment and, innovation and technology.
It
is estimated that globally about 1 billion people have some form of disability
and they continue to face appalling levels of stigma, discrimination and abuse.
