Molotov cocktail thrown into compound of State Counsellor’s residence in Yangon

A man reportedly threw a Molotov cocktail (a crude incendiary device) into the compound of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s residence yesterday morning at around 6:30 a.m.

This was reported by an eyewitness to the police post at the entrance to the State Counsellor’s residence in No. 54/56 University Avenue Road, Golden Valley Ward (1), Bahan Township, Yangon.
The eyewitness was driving past the Kokkine traffic light along the University Avenue Road towards Kamayut Township when the incident occurred. According to the statement of this eyewitness, the man thought to have thrown the Molotov cocktail was also seen at the bus stop near the South Korean Embassy. Three men showed up at the bus stop: While two men stayed in place, the third threw the Molotov cocktail, the eyewitness reported. The eyewitness handed over a photograph of the suspect to the police on duty at the entrance to the compound of the State Counsellor’s residence.
U Than Tun, 62, who was in the compound heard a small explosion and went to investigate. He found a small fire burning. He doused the fire with water, but the area still smelled of kerosene. On searching the compound, he found a bottle that appeared to be filled with kerosene had been thrown into the compound.
Except for part of a tarpaulin sheet that was slightly burnt by the fire, no other damage was reported. The incident is under investigation.
A picture of the suspect was shown on Yangon Police Facebook and was described as about 40 years old, short black hair, about 5 ft. 5 inches tall, brown skin and fat bodied man wearing a pink T-shirt and a sarong with blue squares.
