Power supply restored in Kyaukme, Hsipaw after repairs

 

POWER infrastructure in Kyaukme and Hsipaw, Shan State (North), which was damaged by the destruction caused by terrorist insurgents, has been repaired, and electricity supply has been restored in certain areas.

The 66-kV Mansan-Hsipaw power line, 33-kV Hsipaw-Kyaukme power line, three 66-kV and 33-kV substations, distribution lines and transformers were damaged, resulting in power outages from the national grid in Kyaukme on 25 June 2024 and Hsipaw on 26 June 2024.

After the two towns were recaptured by Tatmadaw, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy began repairing and reconstructing the damaged 66-kV Hsipaw Substation, 33-kV Kyaukme (Panpaung) Substation, the66- kV Mansan-Hsipaw and 33-kV Hsipaw-Kyaukme power lines, 11-kV and 400-volt distribution lines, and 11/0.4-kV transformers. The work began on 15 November 2025, using Union and Shan State government budgets.

While the repair works were underway, two diesel generators with capacities of 665 kW and 200 kW provided temporary electricity to essential facilities in Hsipaw. In Kyaukme, the 2-MW Nam Saung Ngaung small hydropower plant provided temporary electricity to schools, hospitals, police stations, government offices and religious buildings.

Following the repair efforts, electricity from the national grid was restored at 11 am on 22 September 2026. The Kyaukme Substation now supplies seven urban wards, Kyaukme General Hospital, 29 government offices and six schools, while the Hsipaw Substation supplies 10 urban wards, Hsipaw People’s Hospital, 21 government offices and seven schools.

The ministry continues its efforts to repair and reconstruct power plants, substations and transmission and distribution lines damaged by the incidents, with priority given to restoring electricity to the remaining areas as soon as possible.
