NSPNC, Political Parties Move to Fast-Track Peace Efforts

 

The second-day meeting of the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) and representatives of 32 political parties took place in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

Speaking at the event, NSPNC Chairman Lt-Gen Yar Pyae discussed the ongoing dialogues between the committee and political parties, issues to be discussed and further work plans for peace processes. Committee member Lt-Gen Aye Win (Rtd) also explained the selection and voting procedures for the political parties’ working group.

Representatives of the 32 political parties voted to select 16 permanent and 16 alternate members of the working group, with the selection approved by the election chairing body.

In the afternoon, participants discussed the role of political parties in political dialogue, transitional arrangements for the future peace process, amendments to the 2008 Constitution, relations between the Union and state and region governments, engagement with groups not yet involved in peace talks, and bilateral negotiations aimed at achieving ceasefires.

Committee Secretary Lt-Gen Min Naing also reviewed the two-day discussions on constitutional and federal matters, the role of political parties, the link between ceasefires and political dialogue, public security and socioeconomic needs, women’s participation in the peace process, international and diplomatic engagement, and ways to engage with newly emerged armed groups.

The meeting concluded with remarks by Dr Aung Myat Oo, leader of the political parties’ working group and NSPNC Chairman Lt-Gen Yar Pyae.
