AFTER the online digital smart meter application system was introduced, there were 9,686 applications in two weeks, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.
For household, commercial, and industrial uses, new electricity meters can be applied for online starting from 15 August 2026, aiming to make the process faster, eliminate the involvement of agents and staff members, and reduce the cost and time for applicants.
Out of 9,686 applications, 2,482 are incomplete, and 7,204 are accepted, of which 1,331 meters have already been installed as of 29 August. The faster the online application is processed, the faster the meter installation; the first meter installation could be made in 27 hours after applying.
It costs K250,000 for household meter, K1,000,000 for household power meter (10kW), K1,230,000 for household power meter (20kW), K1,460,000 for household power meter (30kW) while K1,077,500 for industrial power meter (10kW), K1,382,500 for industrial power meter (20kW) and K1,687,500 for industrial power meter (30kW).
If there are difficulties in the application process, enquiries can be made to the respective state or regional offices, or individuals can read the user guide at www.moee.gov.mm.
The digital smart meter system can offer automatic meter reading without reading staff, and meter bills, either prepaid or postpaid, can be made via mobile banking and wallets. Users can check power usage via their phone.
