According to officials, upgrade works at Dawei Airport are about 75 per cent complete.
The
existing runway is 12,000 feet long and 100 feet wide. As part of the upgrade,
it is being widened by 25 feet on each side along its entire length, with
additional pavement layers being laid.
Construction,
which is currently suspended due to the monsoon season, is expected to resume
around the end of October. The airport is expected to accommodate large cargo
aircraft by the end of this year.
Once
fully upgraded, the airport is expected to bring significant benefits to the
Dawei region, particularly in connection with the proposed Dawei Special
Economic Zone.
From
2021 to 2025, upgrade projects were carried out at Dawei, Pathein, Lashio,
Kengtung, Tachilek, Monghsat, NyaungU and Myeik airports. The upgrades aim to
boost tourism, trade and investment through international air services.
