UNION Minister for Hotels, Tourism and Culture U Maung Myint urged that in order to protect against the declining number of experts in the Myanmar marionette theatre industry, the younger generation must be taught through the passing down of knowledge and continuously cultivated.
The Union Minister made this remark at the opening ceremony of the “Myanmar Traditional Marionette Crafting Training Course,” which was jointly organized on 26 July by the ministry and the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Trust.
“In the Myanmar marionette theatre field, experts are becoming scarce; in particular, it has been observed that there are very few experts who make traditional Myanmar string puppets. To safeguard against this decline in experts, it is necessary to hand down knowledge to the younger generation,” urged the Union Minister.
He further stated that Myanmar’s marionette theatre is a heritage dating back many years, and that there are records of it having performed not only domestically but also in foreign countries.
“The art of crafting Myanmar traditional string puppets is an art and craft that combines sculpture, painting, and design. A lifelike marionette is possible only if they are harmonious and beautiful. Particularly, for different characters such as the prince, princess, ogre, and monkey, it is an art that requires dedicated efforts” he said. — MT/ ZN
