PYITHU HLUTTAW Speaker U Khin Yi received a delegation led by Ambassador of India to Myanmar Mr Abhay Thakur in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday afternoon.
During the
meeting, the Speaker noted that Myanmar and India have similar parliamentary
structures, saying that the Pyithu Hluttaw has established 22 committees,
referred to as “mini-parliaments”, and briefed the delegation on the Hluttaw’s
ongoing activities.
He expressed
Myanmar’s interest in enhancing cooperation between the two parliaments to
strengthen the lawmakers’ capacity and develop human resources. He also said
Myanmar wishes to study India’s federal system and expand parliamentary
engagement, building on the existing friendly relations between the two
governments. The Speaker added that both sides should deepen cooperation across
all parliamentary areas, including the legislative process. He described the
ongoing workshop in Myanmar on India’s Constitution and federal system as an
important part of parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
Indian
Ambassador Mr Abhay Thakur mentioned that he was pleased to meet the Speaker
and Deputy Speaker again, noting that they had established cordial relations
previously. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to continuing cooperation on
capacity-building programmes for Hluttaw MPs and to supporting closer
engagement between the Hluttaws of the two countries.
Also present
at the meeting were Pyithu Hluttaw Deputy Speaker U Maung Maung Ohn,
International Relations Committee Chair Dr Pwint San, Bill Committee Member
Lt-Col Myo Htet Win, International Relations Committee Member Daw Aye Mya Mya
Kyaing, and officials from the Pyithu Hluttaw Office. The Indian delegation
included Acting Deputy Director-General of the Indian Council of World Affairs
Mr N J Gangte and officials from the Embassy of India.
