Public Flocks to Bogyoke Aung San Museum on 79th Martyrs’ Day

 

ON 19 July 2026 the 79th Anniversary of Martyrs’ Day monks, laypeople, and the general public visited the Bogyoke Aung San residence museum on Bogyoke Museum Road (formerly Tower Lane) in Bahan Township, Yangon. The museum, where General Aung San once lived, features eight exhibition zones displaying personal artifacts and historical memorabilia. Near the entrance sits the General’s motorcar, while upstairs corridors show restoration photos preserving the house’s original state.

Among the highlights, a silicone statue of the General reading on the left veranda draws particular attention, as does the family dining table set with boiled peas and Nanbya (baked Indian flat bread) and a handwritten note from the General to his wife Daw Khin Kyi. British and Japanese ceramic tableware are also on display, alongside a digital room showcasing period technology. In the guest hall, visitors can view a painting by U Ngwe Gaing depicting the General farming, as well as a coat gifted by India’s Mr Nehru. The master bedroom features the general’s clothing, hats, and shoes, with an adjacent study and bathroom.

On the upper right side, the children’s bedroom displays Aung San Lin’s clothing, playing cards, schoolbooks, and handwritten notes, along with family photos and commemorative pictures of the younger son. Adjoining this is a special meeting room with speech excerpts and photographs of the General and his wife with Gyienphaw ethnic damsels. Outside, the kitchen and a preserved pond where Aung San Lin tragically drowned remain as they were, and the final exhibition zone at the exit offers interactive tech displays and puzzle challenges.

Deputy Director Daw Thi Thi Thaung of the National Museum (Yangon) explained: “From the General’s birth on 13 February 1915, to his assassination on 19 July 1947, we comprehensively present his independence efforts, family life, and historical journey. Students and visitors showed great interest.”

The museum drew crowds of students and families, with successful puzzle solvers receiving souvenir gifts. Regular opening hours are 9:30 am-4:30 pm (closed Mondays and public holidays), though on Martyrs’ Day it opened specially from 7 am-5 pm.
