Myanmar, China sign cooperation agreement on 2026 Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund projects

The signing ceremony of the Agreement of Cooperation on Projects of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund (2026) was held on 28 May 2026 at the M-Gallery Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw.

The Agreement was signed by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar in the presence of U Tin Maung Swe, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs. Also present at the ceremony were the Union Ministers and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, Ministry of Electricity and Energy, Ministry of Industry and MSME Development and Ministry of Hotels, Tourism and Culture.

At the ceremony, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Tin Maung Swe delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the significance of the signing ceremony as 2026 marks the 10th Anniversary of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation. He appreciated China for its consistent support to the Mekong countries through the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund (LMCSF). He recognized that the LMCSF has been instrumental in implementing people-centred development projects and has significantly contributed to the socioeconomic development of the people in the region. Since 2017, Myanmar has received 140 projects, which are valued at US$40.46 million. For 2026, Myanmar will implement eight projects, and these projects will contribute to the country’s efforts in promoting agriculture, energy, environmental conservation, water resource management, MSME development and cultural cooperation.

The Union minister reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment to working closely with China and other member countries to promote peace, prosperity, sustainability and inclusive development in the region.

Ms Ma Jia, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar, also delivered the remarks.

The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation is a sub-regional cooperation mechanism which was officially launched in 2016 with the aim of promoting sustainable and inclusive regional development among six member countries, namely Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
