UEC Chairman meets political parties

The Union Election Commission (UEC) held a meeting with the political parties yesterday at the UEC office’s conference hall.

Speaking at the meeting, UEC Chairman U Than Soe said the election Phase I was successfully held on 28 December 2025, and arrangements are being made to hold Phase II and Phase III. Sixty days were permitted for election-related speech and campaign activities, and following the completion of Phase I, campaign periods were also approved for the coming Phases II and III.

He then urged them to follow the law and regulations in conducting electoral campaigns, and warned that insulting or defaming rival parties or candidates during campaigning could be recognized as a criminal offence and also as an electoral malpractice. Such actions, he said, should be regarded as unethical actions and would tanish both the image of the election and that of the political party concerned.

He also added that the lists of elected Hluttaw representatives after Phase I are being released, and the expenses must be submitted in time in accordance with rule 102 of the relevant Hluttaw Election Rule, and those who fail to submit will be declared disqualified.

He highlighted the activities of UEC for the election regarding displaying voter lists three times, transparent electoral processes for advance voting and displaying of results at the relevant election subcommissions.

He continued that about 1,544 observers, including international election observers, international and local journalists, were allowed to cover news, aiming to recognize the multiparty democratic general election as a free, fair and transparent election, whereas the international election observers made positive comments saying it was a successful election as they saw the voters casting votes actively.

He mentioned the ongoing work plans of the UEC in holding free and fair elections accurately and transparently in accordance with the laws, rules and procedures, and forming respectful Hluttaws through dignified elections.

The attendees coordinated the discussion, and the UEC chairman concluded the meeting.

The meeting was attended by members of UEC, officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Immigration and Population, UEC office, chairpersons and leaders of 47 political parties.
