Myanmar’s Thanaka nears UNESCO intangible heritage listing

 

The Myanmar traditional Thanaka culture is now one step closer to being recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The documentation required for the application has been completed, according to Daw Sanda Khin, Chair of the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Trust.

To support the nomination of Thanaka as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage, the full moon day of Tabodwe month has been designated as Myanmar Thanaka Day. Commemorative events celebrating the Thanaka tradition are being held at national museums, cultural museums and national libraries across the country. Public opinion surveys are also being conducted and the results will be submitted to UNESCO.

“The process of having Myanmar’s Thanaka culture recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage began in 2020. This year, we continue to fulfil the requirements set by UNESCO and supplement the evidence of public participation. The completed documentation will be submitted by 31st March. In addition to the documentation, the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Preservation Association will also be submitting a documentary film to UNESCO,” said Daw Sanda Khin.

Thanaka has been used as a traditional cosmetic in Myanmar for over a thousand years. It continues to be a living tradition and is valued and preserved as a cultural symbol of the entire nation. Myanmar’s Thanaka tradition meets the five criteria set by UNESCO for recognition as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage. The application process began in January 2020.
