ACCORDING to a statement released on 8 December by the Labour Attache Office under the Embassy of Myanmar to Thailand, the Union Minister for Labour handled the necessary matters regarding the Myanmar MoU workers in Thailand during his visit.
For cooperation in labour issues between Myanmar and Thailand, the delegation led by the Union minister visited factories and workplaces where most Myanmar migrant workers live, including the city of Surat, where a Certificate of Identity (CI) issuing centre will be opened.
Meeting the MoU Myanmar workers who are working at the Asian Seafoods factory in Surat, the Remittance Management System Mobile Application was demonstrated the easy money transfer system to send 25 per cent of their salary to their families in Myanmar through official channels.
In addition, a representative from the Ministry of Planning and Finance explained the two per cent tax, and a representative from the Ministry of Immigration and Population explained the EID system.
Then, the Union minister visited the places where the Certificate of Identity (CI) issuing station will be opened, and according to the decision of the Thai government, Myanmar workers who were nominated for temporary residence and work permit (unique identification card, which is also called pink card) in Thailand have been extended from 1 October 2023 to 13 February 2025. The workers must apply for a work permit, take health check and purchase take health insurance before 15 January 2024.
A total of 1,450 baht per worker for applying for a work permit, 500 baht for medical checkups and 1,600 baht for one-year insurance from the Ministry of Public Health or 990 baht for six months of insurance from a private company and those who are not covered by the social security insurance system must purchase one-year insurance. The total cost will be from a minimum of 2,940 baht to a maximum of 3,550 baht per worker. Those workers who have completed the work permit and medical checkup process must continue to collect biometrics data before 31 October 2024, obtain a residence permit in Thailand at the Immigration Bureau, and register at the Department of Provincial Administration or Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and must apply for a CI or passport before 31 October 2024.
Five CI issuing stations and three mobile teams are open on the Myanmar side. Thanks to mobile teams, workers will be able to apply for identity documents without wasting work time, and the employer will also be able to continue to operate the business at a fast pace.
