Htamanthi Sanctuary gets official certificate of ASEAN Heritage Park

MYANMAR officials received an document that declared Htamanthi Wildlife Sanctuary as an ASEAN Heritage Park.

The document was presented to Director General of Forest Department Dr Nyi Nyi Kyaw, the official of Htamanthi Wildlife Sanctuary and a representative of local ethnic people at the 6th ASEAN Heritage Parks Conference (AHP6) which was held in Pakse in the Champasak province of Lao PDR from 21 to 24 October.
The 15th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Environment, held from 7 to 8 October in Siem Reap, Cambodia, announced the sanctuary in the list of ASEAN Heritage Park (AHP) after the approval of ASEAN member countries during the 29th Meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Nature Conservation and Biodiversity held in Vientiane, Laos, in early May.
The nomination document for this wildlife sanctuary was submitted to the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity- ACB) as this sanctuary has a good ecosystem and is a habitat for endangered animal species such as tigers, wild elephants and pangolins, as well as rare plant species.
The conservation works started in 1974 by developing it into a wildlife sanctuary with the appointments of staff members and drafting management plan for it.
