THE Independent Commission of
Enquiry (ICOE) held their eighth meeting from 3rd to 4th May 2019.
The Commission had a courtesy call
on Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Armed
Forces. ICOE welcomed the establishment of the Myanmar Military Court on 18
March 2019. Both sides exchanged views on the events that brought about the
evolution of the Myanmar Military Court: i.e. the events of 2017 in Rakhine
State, international pressures and the creation of ICOE. The Commission
expressed appreciation on the openness and reassurance of full cooperation from
Myanmar Tatmadaw with respect to the issues submitted by ICOE, outcomes of the
Military Court deliberations and access to witnesses examined by the Military
Investigation Team.
The Commission explained to the
Commander in Chief on ICOE’s work which is a gathering of data and evidence
pursuant to its mandate.
The preliminary report of the ICOE
is in the process of being prepared for submission to the President.
