According to the Zeyathiri Township Fire Department, the fire was completely extinguished in 15 minutes by 3.47 p.m. with help from the police, the Red Cross, and local people.
A sergeant from Zeyathiri Township Fire Department said they started extinguishing the fire from the façade where it was burning the strongest. He said after putting that part out, they focused on the flames left on the ground. It was over in 15 minutes because everyone helped and since there were water tanks near the shopping centre, getting water was not difficult, he said. He added that the success of putting out the fire was also due to every responsible figure from their department coming down to the scene.
Two people received nonfatal injuries from splintered glass while helping to put out the fire, and they have been sent to the hospital.
A preliminary inspection designated the fire as Level 2, and concluded that it was caused by a short circuit. The authorities are still calculating the extent of the damage caused by the blaze.
