A
ceremony to distribute humanitarian aid from Singapore to the Rakhine State
People through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on
Disaster Management (AHA Centre) was held yesterday noon at the meeting hall of
the office of the Yangon Region head, Relief and Resettlement Department (RRD)
in Kyaikwine Pagoda Road, Mayangone Township, Yangon.
At
the ceremony, Indonesia-based AHA Centre Executive Director Adelina Kamal and
Singapore Ambassador to Myanmar, Mr. Robert Chua, discussed the aid donation.
The
Singapore Ambassador transferred the humanitarian aid donated by Singapore.
Relief and Resettlement Department Director-General Dr. Ko Ko Naing accepted
the donation and presented a document of honor to the Ambassador.
With
regards to the donation of aid, Singapore Ambassador to Myanmar Robert Chua
said, “The items donated today are kitchen wares for the people in Rakhine
State. The Singapore government is working together with the Myanmar government
as a good neighbor, as well as a fellow country in the region. I pray for the
quick implementation of reconstruction and peace sectors, too. (Singapore) will
cooperate in Rakhine State reconstruction works. The Singapore government is
ready to cooperate with Myanmar in whatever is needed.”
The
day’s donation is 13 types of kitchen wares in 3,800 cartons, worth Singapore
dollar 100,000, and RRD will provide the aid to displaced people in Rakhine
State who are facing difficulties.
“The
aid donated today will be sent immediately to Rakhine State. Once it is there,
relevant organisations, including the Rakhine State government, will deliver it
to local people who are in need. Where the earlier donations were being
delivered was also being told to the respective donors. The current donations
will be sent directly to the people as soon as possible,” said RRD Director
General Dr. Ko Ko Naing.
The
ceremony was attended by RRD officials, Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials,
Ambassadors from ASEAN countries in Myanmar, diplomats and invited guests.
Similar
humanitarian assistance for local people facing difficulties in Rakhine State
was being provided. On 24 November, India donated India Rupee 4 million in
household goods and food. On 21 September, Indonesia donated US$ 286,049 worth
of goods, medicines, food and temporary tents. On 14 October, the AHA Centre
donated some US$ 450,000 worth of kitchen wares, personal hygiene products,
tents, power distribution equipment, two generators and related items. China
had also made cash donations.
