An agreement was reached
yesterday in which the government of India will provide US25 million (Ks34.1
billion) to Myanmar for the development of Rakhine State.
The Union Minister for Social
Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Win Myat Aye received a delegation led by
Dr. S. Jaishankar at May Khalar Hall in the ministry yesterday afternoon.
During the meeting, they
discussed matters relating to providing assistance, which can help the
socio-economic development in Rakhine State, the importance of assistance for
locals and the commitments, which includes a development package for Rakhine,
and extending the bilateral agenda.
On behalf of the Myanmar and
Indian governments, the Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and
Resettlement U Soe Aung and Foreign Secretary Dr. Jaishankar signed the MoU.
According to the MoU, the two
ministries agreed on long-term socio-economic development of Rakhine state.
The Indian Government will grant
Myanmar a total of US$25 million in five years, and Myanmar will receive US$ 5
million annually.
This grant will help in the
process of raising education, healthcare, agriculture, creating infrastructure,
building small bridges, paving the roads, vocational training schools,
preservation of cultural heritage, empowering women and nurturing children in
the region.
