Myanmar plans to boost bamboo production with foreign technology

September 25, 2017
PLANS are underway to develop bamboo plantations in three areas of the country on a commercial scale, according to those from bamboo industry.

Plantations will be set up in Bago Yoma Mountain Range, Rakhine Yoma Mountain Range and Taninthayi Region. China, Thailand and Viet Nam pledged to cooperate with the country to fulfill technical needs for planting.
Bamboo exporters say that both domestic and foreign demands for locally made bamboo-based products, including handicrafts as well as personal and household goods, have gradually been increased. The neighbouring Bangladesh is a major bamboo importer for Myanmar. Singapore and Korea also import the country’s bamboo-based products such as furniture and household utensils.
Myanmar has a great future for bamboo-based handicrafts. Sometimes, demand exceeds supply. According to trade record, the country annually earns about US$5 million from the export of bamboo-based products to abroad.
