Vice President U Henry Van Thio observed development
tasks in Chin State, including construction of a suspension bridge in Manipura,
an affiliated building for the hospital Falam and an airport in Falam.
During his inspection tour yesterday, the Vice
President conveyed a message from State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on the
conservation of great pied hornbills and Taungzalat trees (rhododendron) as
they are symbol of the state.
“All are obliged as a national duty to conserve Chin
State’s hornbills and the Taungzalat trees so they will not become extinct,”
said Vice President U Henry Van Thio at meeting with local people in Falam.
The population of the great hornbill (Buceros
bicornis) also known as the great Indian hornbill or great pied hornbill, is
declining in Chin State, according to environmental conservationists.
At the meeting, he also urged the local people to
grow “Lu” and “Sap” rice, indigenous species of rice which are also facing
extinction in the state.
Before meeting with local people, the Vice President
discussed with Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr Aung
Thu and Chin State Chief Minister U Salai Hlyan Lwe about the agricultural and
education sectors in the state.
The Vice President also inspected the water supply
project built over the Ti River in Hakha and assisted in maintenance of the dam
of the project.
During the trip, U Henry Van Thio also observed
construction of the airport in Falam and assisted in the needs for the project.
