Diplomatic relations between Myanmar and Cambodia have a long and positive history, with longstanding bonds of friendship and cordial relations while sharing many similarities in histories, cultures, traditions, religious practices and beliefs, said President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing at the meeting with staff and families of the Myanmar Embassy and the Military Attaché Office and scholarship trainees at the Myanmar Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, yesterday morning.
He noted that, leaders of the two countries have made reciprocal goodwill visits over the years and have worked to strengthen bilateral friendship and relations. He said that he had undertaken the current goodwill visit with the aim of preserving and further strengthening these longstanding and positive traditions of friendship.
As Myanmar and Cambodia share Mon-Khmer heritage, the two countries have similarities in cultures and Theravada Buddhist traditions, the President said. He added that he had learned that there were also some similarities between Mon literature and Cambodian literature. Although the two countries are not neighbouring countries, the shared cultural traditions have contributed to close and cordial relations between them.
The President said that Myanmar is
primarily engaged in agri-based production, while Cambodia also places emphasis
on agricultural and livestock industries. He noted that Myanmar is opening and
operating technical and vocational schools focusing on industrial, agricultural
and livestock-related fields in order to promote production based on
agriculture and livestock and support national economic development.
He stressed that only through the development of agriculture and livestock
industries can the country produce the goods it needs, meet domestic demand and
increase exports. This, in turn, would improve the circulation of money within
the country and contribute to growth in the national GDP.
Regarding the fight against online financial fraud and online gambling, the President said that Myanmar is undertaking efforts to eradicate such activities as a national task, while Cambodia is also taking measures to combat online scams and online gambling.
He stressed the need to seek foreign income through activities that benefit the country and to avoid methods that could harm the country and its people. While some people become involved in online scam and gambling operations as a result of threats, others knowingly participate for their own free will. He added that foreign nationals arrested in Myanmar for involvement in online financial fraud and online gambling activities have been systematically handed over to the relevant countries in accordance with the law. Myanmar nationals involved in such activities are also being taken action effectively in accordance with the law.
He stressed that staff of the embassy and military attaché office, together with their families, should keep eyes on the accurate history and current situation of the country, and learn the history, current development and bilateral relations with the country in which they are serving duties, to further strengthen bilateral relations.
Regarding language learning, the
President urged those studying and serving abroad to continuously learn the
language and literature of their host country, saying that language proficiency
would help strengthen relations with the countries concerned and contribute to
closer bilateral ties. He also called for Myanmar nationals in Cambodia to be
assisted and protected in accordance with the law and urged them to live
together in unity and harmony.
After the meeting, the President presented foodstuffs and cash awards to
embassy and military attaché office staff, their families, and trainees through
the Ambassador and the Military Attaché (Army, Navy and Air).
The President visited the site where a new Myanmar Embassy building in Cambodia is to be constructed.
