PLANS are underway to cultivate more than 428,000 acres of monsoon paddy in Kayin State during the 2026-2027 financial year to ensure food self-sufficiency for local farmers, increase household incomes, and export surplus rice, according to the Department of Agriculture.
To date, more than 180,000 acres of
monsoon paddy have been planted, and cultivation is continuing on the remaining
acreage. To ensure good yields, Department of Agriculture staff are conducting
field visits and providing technical assistance at every stage of cultivation,
from soil preparation to harvest.
In Kayin State, more than 400,000
acres of monsoon paddy were cultivated last year, with an average yield of
69.78 baskets per acre. The Department of Agriculture is distributing
high-quality seed varieties to farmers. In addition, crops such as monsoon
grain corn, monsoon green gram, taro, sugarcane, coffee, tea, black gram,
sesame, and sunflower are being cultivated across Kayin State, while cardamom and
turmeric are being grown in the Thantaunggyi area.
To improve crop yields, the
Department of Agriculture is providing close support by promoting the adoption
of good agricultural practices and delivering technical advice through Viber
groups.
