UNION Minister for Hotels and Tourism U Aung Thaw received a delegation led by His Eminence Sergiy, Russian Orthodox Archbishop for Metropolitan Singapore and South-East Asia yesterday in Nay Pyi Taw.
The Union minister first greeted the delegation and the Orthodox archbishop underscored that religious teaching is important in each and every country. It is a good blessing of Lord Buddha that the majority of Buddhists are living in Myanmar, he added.
He also highlighted that efforts are underway to establish one Orthodox Church for Russians and Russian tourists in Myanmar as Russians often visit Russian Orthodox churches in the countries where they visit. It would attract Russian tourists.
Afterwards, the Union minister said that the Russian Orthodox religious organization should be respected. Although the majority of the population in Myanmar are Buddhists, the people have the right to enjoy freedom of religion, he added.
He reiterated his belief that the establishment of the Russian Orthodox Church in Myanmar will support the further development of Myanmar-Russia tourism cooperation. The Union minister and the Orthodox archbishop exchanged souvenirs and had documentary group photos taken with the attendees.
